Austin, the capital of Texas, hosts two military bases. Camp Mabry is an open post, meaning any adults with valid photo ID and any children accompanying them, may enter during daylight hours. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is the second facility; its primary purpose is commercial aviation. Foot Hood is a major military installation, about 60 miles away.
Camp Mabry
Camp Mabry is named for Brigadier General Woodford H. Mabry, Texas adjutant general from Jan. 23, 1891 to May 4, 1898. It's the state's third-oldest military installation still in use. Camp Mabry occupies a hill overlooking the Colorado River, about 3 miles west of downtown Austin. The public can take advantage of the Texas Military Forces Museum, a picnic area and a jogging track.
Camp Mabry is home to the Joint Force Headquarters of the Texas Military Forces, which includes the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard and the Texas State Guard. The 136th Regional Training Institute is located in the Texas National Guard Academy. You can also find the United States Property and Fiscal Office and the offices of the Adjutant General and the Assistant Adjutant Generals for Army and Air on the base.
The camp's Parachute Packing and Maintenance Shop, manned by the 49th Armored Division's 143rd Infantry Regiment and Long Range Surveillance Detachment, rigs parachutes for all branches of the American armed forces.
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
The airport began as the Del Valle Army Air Base in 1942, built astride the Chisholm Trail. It became Bergstrom Army Air Field the next year to honor the first Austin native to die in World War II. The city reacquired the land when the U.S. Air Force closed operations, then reopened it as the city's major airport on May 23, 1999.
The airport serves the Texas Military Forces and the 449th Aviation Support Battalion's Army Aviation Support Facility. The latter maintains 33 aircraft to undertake missions in peacetime.
Fort Hood
Fort Hood sits only 60 miles northeast of the city. The base is the largest active-duty armored post in the United States, the only one on American soil capable of supporting two full armored divisions. About 71,000 people live on the base, of which almost 42,000 are soldiers. The equipment at Fort Hood includes more than 500 tanks, almost 500 Bradley fighting vehicles, about 1,600 other tracked vehicles, almost 10,000 wheeled vehicles and close to 200 fixed and rotary-winged aircraft.
